Caring for your Street Cat Design
Street Cat Designs are made with the utmost care and attention to durability that is possible using the
components and materials that I do. They are delicate, not fragile. Treated with care, they should last for
years.
14K gold fill:
Gold filled wire is made by heat bonding a hollow tube of 14K gold onto a core of a base metal, usually
brass. This process produces an heirloom quality gold product that has more than 1000 times the gold that
plating has. As such, it is long lasting, durable and cleanable, unlike it's plated counterpart. To clean your
gold filled piece, I suggest using a soft toothbrush and toothpaste or mild liquid hand soap rather than a
cleaning compound. Pat dry, then blow dry with a hair dryer. A soft polishing cloth can also be used. Store in
an airtight bag away from light.
Argentium Sterling and 92.5 Sterling
I use both Argentium and 92.5 sterling in my work. 92.5 sterling silver is pure silver mixed with 7.5% copper,
to make a more durable metal. In Argentium Silver, the copper is replaced with an alloy called Germanium,
and is supposed to be more tarnish resistant. I suggest that these sterlings are cleaned the same way as
the gold fill, with a soft toothbrush and either toothpaste or mild liquid hand soap. Again, pat dry and blow
dry to complete the drying process. Commercial cleansing dips can be used on sterling as long as the piece
does not include pearls, gemstones or crystals. A soft polishing cloth can also be used. Store your sterling
piece in an airtight bag, away from light.
